what the hell – part 8

He went to grab her hand, but Alex pulled away. “Why should I trust you? I don’t even know your name.”

Lowering his hand, he sighed. “I am Daniel.” With an extended arm, he gestured to the outside. “Do you really want to face all of that alone?”

“Hello, Daniel. I’m Alex. And no. I don’t.” She took a step forward and waved for him to lead the way.

They exited out the back loading bay of the store. Monsters from each portal still ran through the streets. They attacked each other and any human they came across. Daniel crouched down and pulled Alex with him. “Stay low and stay quiet.”

A fighter jet boomed overhead toward the larger beast. Alex had to cover her mouth to keep from screaming. Tanks lumbered down the main roads, firing their large-caliber projectiles at the swarm of beasts. It wasn’t doing much good. When the smoke cleared, the terrors turned their collective attention on the machines, shredded the metal, and tore apart the soldiers inside.

Blood covered nearly every surface Alex could see. Bodies lay in heaps with missing parts or open stomachs. Smoking and shredded cars stood abandoned or filled with whatever remained of their owners.

Daniel started to move but stopped. A pack of the black ones searched the alley across from where they hid. His eyes followed them until the monsters turned a corner and were out of sight.

She decided to hold on tight to his belt loop and followed when he began to walk again. There definitely was no way she would be able to survive this alone.
