The air was thick with coppery blood and sulfur. Screams turning into laughter and then shut off stabbed at her ears.
The man began to drag her somewhere and she fought even harder. Something wet dripped from his hands where she scratched and bit. The taste of it told her it was more blood. Her mind still danced on the edge of insanity but began to draw back. She stopped fighting.
Her feet bounced over uneven ground, and she felt the corner of a building scrape her shoulder. After a few more seconds, his hand was lifted but now he held her shoulders with both. She screamed at him. “What are you doing? I need to see!”
He slapped her hard across her cheek. “No, you don’t. Everyone is either dead from the beasts or dead by their own hands.”
Confused, she simply stared at him. Her brain felt foggy and tainted like a bad taste in your mouth after eating something that had molded.
“I noticed… when others looked too long, they killed themselves.”
She shook free. “What do you care? You don’t even know me.”
“Someone has to…”
