Memento Mori

Kaya and Kimimela screamed with delight as the doors opened, allowing the concert goers to finally enter. The sisters had been waiting for six months to see this group. It was finally happening.

The twins shared everything. They like the same groups, wore the same clothes, even chased the same boys. To call them inseparable would be a severe understatement. Each breathed life into the other.

“I’ll go get us a spot. You grab the T-shirts. Ok?” Kaya jumped up and down.

Kimimela quickly embraced Kaya in a tight hug and ran off to get a good place in line. By the time she got to the end of the line, Kimi was only the fifth person. Luck was on her side today. She hoped that luck stayed with them and Kaya could get the front row in their general admission concert.

She snagged a couple of the most expensive shirts and began her track to the arena. Posters crowded every wall as she fast walked. People with home made shirts yelled at her to stop and check out their cheaper prices. Smells of beer and pretzels fill her lungs causing Kimi’s stomach to growl. No time! Gotta get to Kaya.   They could eat something after the concert. Jim’s was always open.

Kimi launched through the open double doors to the arena. A whimper of fear escaped her mouth. It was already packed. Other groups must have had the same idea as them by splitting up to get the best spot possible.

She scanned the sea of heads for Kaya. It would be hard to find her since they both had straight black hair. Most of the people here had the same color. Her fear began to transform into irritation. Kaya should have been watching for her, as well.

There was a small gap between the right wall and the crowd, so Kimi decided to skirt the swarm to get a better look. Since they were one of the first to enter, her sister should be towards the front somewhere. When she still couldn’t find her, Kimi resorted to her special power. Whistling.

Kimi placed her first and last finger in the corners of her mouth and blew. There was no amount of noise that could beat the sound she now produced. The entire gathering instantly became silent looking for the source. It would only be seconds before they began talking again. Kimi frantically searched the faces for Kaya. Finally, a long slender arm waved above all the heads. She could hear her name being called at the same time.

Making a bee line towards Kaya, Kimi pushed her way through. She didn’t care at this point if anyone grew angry with her. It didn’t matter. All that mattered was getting to Kaya.

“What the hell, Kaya? You were supposed to be looking for me from here.” Kimi crossed her arms but the smile on her face betrayed any semblance of anger she tried to put on.”

I’m sorry, Kimi. These guys here were talking to me and I didn’t look up in time. Thank goodness you can whistle like that.”

The mention of guys got her attention. “Guys? Which ones?”  There were so many, Kimi couldn’t figure out who Kaya was talking about.

Kaya’s smile widened. “These over here. I’ll introduce you.” Kaya grabbed Kimi’s hand but then the lights dimmed. Cymbals chimed in the background. It was this band’s signal that they were about to begin. “Ok, after the concert, then.”

They remained holding hands until the lights went out completely. Kimi didn’t feel it when Kaya released her, but everything was way too quiet for so many people in one space. Fear gripped her heart. Pain shot through Kimi’s chest. Her breathing came in short spurts. What is going on? Is this part of the show?

Just as she thought this, brilliant bright light blinded her. She squeezed her eyes shut, rubbing them with both hands. Through splayed fingers, Kimi squinted open her eyes. Breathing became even harder. A gasp rushed out, but she couldn’t seem to take in more air. Pain electrified her chest as a panic riddled heart tried to escape.

She was no longer at the concert…

Kimi spun in a circle to take in her new surroundings. Where the hell was she?
